The folding bike as a starting point

 

The story of Tern begins with the folding bicycle. The brand wanted to develop bicycles that take up little space in smaller homes, are easy to take on public transport and are practical for daily travel in the city.

That experience has also influenced the development of electric bikes and cargo bikes. The goal is not only to make the bike shorter, but also to use the available space more efficiently: smaller wheels, an adjustable handlebar stem, the option to park the bike upright, and accessories that are thoughtfully integrated into the bike.

Tern still offers fully fledged folding bikes, with or without electric assistance. They are primarily intended for multimodal travel, transport in a car, storage in a limited space or for cyclists who want to be able to fold their bike completely.

However, Tern cargo bikes cannot be folded up in the same way as traditional folding bikes. Depending on the model, the handlebars can be folded down to reduce the height of the bike. Furthermore, various models can be stored or moved in an upright position.

That distinction is important: folding the bike completely, folding down the handlebars and storing the bike upright all serve different purposes.

This allows the bicycle to carry more passengers or luggage without becoming as long or wide as a large box bike with a front cargo box.

On many Tern models, the saddle and handlebar post can be adjusted quickly. This allows the same bike to be easily used by multiple family members without needing extensive adjustments each time.

The payload capacity is not the only reason to choose a Tern. The bike, the rear rack, the handlebar post, the kickstand and the accessories are coordinated to make daily use as practical as possible.

Nevertheless, it remains important to choose a model that suits the number of passengers you actually transport. A single-passenger model is generally lighter and more pleasant when you are only taking one child with you. A two-passenger model offers more space and possibilities, but is usually heavier, requires more accessories and costs more.

Storing vertically is especially useful when the bicycle has to fit in a narrow garage, an apartment or a shared bicycle shed. Check in advance whether you can safely place the bicycle upright with the fitted accessories, hold it stably and manoeuvre it through the available doorways.

On the slopes of Beersel, Alsemberg and the south of Brussels, the engine and transmission must suit the weight of the passengers, luggage and accessories. However, the most powerful or fully equipped version is not necessary for every family.

Designed in Finland, developed in Taiwan

Tern was founded in 2011, building on many years of experience with folding bikes. The brand works with an international team: the bikes are designed in Finland and engineered in Taiwan. Tern’s head office and innovation laboratory are located in New Taipei City.

This expertise is reflected in both the folding bikes and the cargo bikes. For cargo and passenger bikes, Tern tests the frames and front forks in-house up to the specified load. They are then tested by independent laboratories in accordance with the standards applicable to the model in question. Depending on the model, the electrical systems and drivetrains are sourced from specialist manufacturers such as Bosch and Shimano.

Tern also focuses on a long service life. For bikes covered by the 7-Year Support programme, essential replacement parts remain available for at least seven years after purchase. With the right accessories, the bike can also be adapted as transport needs change.

Which Tern should I choose?

The Tern range evolves regularly. Motors, transmissions, batteries and equipment may change depending on the specification and model year. However, the main difference between the models remains the same: some are designed for a single passenger, while others can accommodate two passengers and more luggage.

You should therefore start by considering the number of passengers and the amount of luggage you actually want to carry. You should also take into account your desired level of comfort and the available storage space. Once you have chosen the right model, you can compare the engine, transmission, battery and accessories.

Quick Haul: for one passenger and a simple setup

The Quick Haul is a compact electric cargo bike designed for everyday journeys, shopping trips and carrying a single passenger on the rear carrier. To do this, you must use accessories that are suitable for the passenger and the model in question.

Thanks to its compact size and simple design, the Quick Haul rides more like a standard city bike than a large cargo bike. It is particularly suitable for families carrying one child who do not need extra space for a second passenger or a larger load.

The engines, transmissions and batteries available vary depending on the version and model year. You should therefore always check the specifications of the specific bike on offer.

HSD: for one passenger with greater capacity and comfort

The HSD remains compact, but offers more space and comfort for carrying one passenger and luggage.

With the right accessories and within the permitted weight limits, it can carry a child or an adult passenger. The spacious rear rack, the adjustable saddle and the adjustable handlebars make the HSD particularly suitable for regular family use and when several people ride the same bike.

The motor, transmission, controls and drive system vary depending on the generation and model. Some versions also feature advanced anti-theft functions or automatic gear-changing. This equipment is not fitted to every HSD and must therefore be checked on the specific bike on offer.

Quick Haul Long: for two passengers in a simple setup

The Quick Haul Long has a long rear rack that can carry up to 90 kg. With the right equipment and within the maximum total weight, it can transport two children or one adult passenger.

It is intended for families who need more passenger and luggage space than the Quick Haul offers, but are looking for a more simply equipped bike than the GSD. The rear rack can be configured with child seats, a seat cushion, grab bars, footpegs, and panniers. Specific carriers are available for dogs. A compatible trailer can also be attached via the integrated mounting points.

The Quick Haul Long can be parked upright and rolled in that position. The handlebar height is adjustable without tools via the Speedlifter stem, but the handlebar post cannot be folded down.

GSD: for intensive family use with more extensive equipment options

The GSD is Tern’s most versatile cargo bike for families. With compatible accessories and within the permitted load limits, it can carry two children or one adult passenger. The rear rack on the current GSD Gen 3 can carry up to 100 kg, and the maximum total weight is 210 kg.

This model is particularly appealing to families who carry two children and their luggage every day, regularly ride with a heavy load, or want extra comfort and customisation options. Compared to the Quick Haul Long, the GSD Gen 3 offers a higher permissible total weight, a suspension fork, integrated footrests, a foldable Physis handlebar stem and the option to fit a second battery.

The exact equipment varies depending on the model. The P, S and R Classes do not all use the same Bosch system or the same transmission. Some models have a chain, whilst others have a belt. In the current Gen 3, Bosch ABS is available on the S and R Classes, but not on the P Class.

The GSD is heavier and more expensive than the Quick Haul Long. Anyone who mainly carries one child or a limited load does not necessarily need this extra capacity. The GSD becomes particularly relevant when two passengers, heavy luggage, extra comfort or the option of a second battery are regularly required.

Tern folding bikes: for multimodal journeys

Tern also offers electric folding bikes and folding bikes without pedal assistance.

They meet a different need than cargo models: they can easily be taken on the train or in the car, take up much less space when folded, and make it possible to combine different modes of transport.

The range changes regularly, so at the time of your request it must be checked which models are available at Supercycles.

One or two passengers: the first choice

The Quick Haul and the HSD are primarily designed to carry a single passenger. The Quick Haul Long and the GSD are fitted with a rear carrier which, with the appropriate accessories, is suitable for carrying two children or one adult passenger.

The stated transport capacity does not mean that every combination is automatically permitted or practical. The following must be taken into account:

  • the maximum permitted total weight of the bicycle;

  • the maximum load of the rear carrier;

  • the weight of each passenger;

  • the weight of the accessories and luggage;

  • the limits of the child safety seat used;

  • the mutual compatibility of the accessories;

  • the recommendations for the specific generation of the bicycle.

Even two children may need different seating arrangements depending on their age. Two child seats, one child seat with a booster cushion, or two seats for older children do not take up the same amount of space.

The number of passengers should therefore never be determined solely on the basis of the figure stated by the manufacturer.

The Tern passenger transport system

Tern approaches passenger transport as a complete system. When a passenger is transported without a child seat in which some of these components are already integrated, four provisions must always be present:

  1. A suitable seat for the passenger.

  2. An individual grab handle for a passenger to hold onto.

  3. A fixed footrest on either side of the bicycle.

  4. A guard that prevents feet, legs, clothing or laces from coming into contact with the wheel.

For young children, the car seat and safety harness must also comply with the car seat manufacturer’s recommendations.

A compatible two-legged stand can provide greater stability when passengers are getting on or off. However, it is no substitute for the cyclist’s supervision: a child must not be left on the bike unless an adult is holding it steady.

Documented and tested safety

A cargo bike has to be able to cope with different stresses than a traditional city bike. The weight of the cyclist, the passengers, the accessories and the load puts strain on the frame, the front fork, the wheels, the brakes and the handlebar stem.

Tern has the frames and forks of its cargo bike models tested by independent bodies according to the standards applicable to the model and generation, including EN 17860 and DIN 79010.

The Bosch eBike systems on the bicycles in question are also UL 2849 certified. This means the motor, battery, charger, cabling and control elements are assessed as a single integrated system.

The applied standard and the tested load are not the same for all Tern bikes. They must be checked on the product sheet of the actually chosen model and the relevant generation.

These certifications are no substitute for adhering to load limits, fitting accessories correctly and carrying out regular maintenance on the bicycle.

A set-up that grows with the family

The extensive range of accessories is a major benefit of a Tern.

Depending on the model and generation, the bike can be fitted with, amongst other things:

  • one or two child seats;
  • seat cushions and backrests for older children;
  • handles or a protective structure;
  • footrests and wheel guards;
  • protection against rain or sun;
  • panniers with various capacities;
  • a front carrier or front basket;
  • solutions for transporting a pet;
  • a trailer or a compatible coupling;
  • accessories for professional freight transport.

Not all of these accessories can be combined with one another. Some also change the width, length or weight of the bicycle, or affect the ability to park it upright.

The layout must therefore be tailored to a typical day’s use: passengers in the morning, a bike without children during the day, shopping on the way home, and the way the bike is stored at home.

What is the difference between the Tern Quick Haul and the HSD?

Both models are compact and, with the right equipment, can transport one passenger.

What is the difference between the Quick Haul Long and the GSD?

However, the GSD is more complex and requires a greater investment.

Are all Tern bikes folding bikes?

No. Tern offers full-sized folding bikes, both electric and non-electric. However, the cargo bikes cannot be folded completely like a traditional folding bike.

Depending on the model, the steering column can be folded down. Various cargo models can also be stored or moved upright, taking up less space when stored.

Can two children be transported on a Tern?

Yes, on the models designed for two passengers, including the Quick Haul Long and the GSD.

The Quick Haul and the HSD are primarily designed for a single passenger. In all cases, the seats, safety features, footrests, the children’s weight and the cycle’s load limits must be checked.

Can an adult be carried on the back?

Various Tern models are designed to carry an adult passenger when fitted with the appropriate equipment.

In doing so, the maximum load on the rear carrier and the maximum permissible total weight of the bicycle must be observed, as must the requirements for the seat, handholds, footrests and wheel guards. The suitability must always be checked for the specific model and generation in question.

Can a Tern be used by more than one cyclist?

Yes. Many models feature a saddle and handlebars that can be adjusted quickly.

However, the range of suitable heights varies per bicycle. A test ride remains recommended if the cyclists differ significantly in height or riding position.

Can all Tern bikes be parked upright?

No. This possibility depends on the model, generation and fitted accessories.

There must also be sufficient headroom and space to stand the bicycle upright. Bear in mind the weight of the loaded bicycle before choosing this storage method.

Can a child seat you already own be used?

Some child seats may be compatible, but don’t automatically assume that they are suitable.

The attachment, the child's weight, the available space, the wheel guards, the other accessories and the model-specific recommendations must be checked before use.

What warranty does Tern offer?

Tern’s standard warranty on the frame, steerer tube and front fork is valid for five years. By registering a new bike free of charge for the Tern Care programme within 30 days of purchase, this cover can be extended to up to ten years, subject to the manufacturer’s terms and conditions.

Other original Tern or BioLogic parts are typically covered for one year, unless stated otherwise. Parts from other manufacturers are covered by their own warranty terms.

Can I go for a test ride on a Tern at Supercycles?

Some models of the Quick Haul, HSD, Quick Haul Long or GSD may be available for a test drive.
