Tern

Compact bikes designed to carry more

Tern develops folding bikes, longtails and midtails with a strong focus on compactness and functionality.

At Supercycles, we mainly feature the brand’s electric longtails and midtails. Depending on the model and equipment, you can carry one or two passengers, groceries or other gear, while keeping dimensions close to those of a conventional bike.

We help you choose the right bike, drive system and accessories based on the passengers you want to carry, your routes, the terrain, the available storage space and your budget.

The folding bike as a starting point

Tern’s story begins with the folding bike. The brand set out to develop bikes that take up little space in smaller homes, are easy to take on public transport and are practical for everyday urban travel.

This experience has also influenced the development of Tern’s electric longtails and midtails. The aim is not simply to make the bike shorter, but also to use the available space more efficiently: smaller wheels, an adjustable handlepost, the ability to store the bike vertically and thoughtfully integrated accessories.

Tern still offers full-size folding bikes, with or without electric assistance. They are mainly intended for people who combine cycling with public transport, want to take their bike in the car or have limited storage space.

Tern longtails and midtails cannot be fully folded like traditional folding bikes. Depending on the model, the handlepost can be folded down to reduce the bike’s height. Several models can also be stored vertically.

This distinction is important: fully folding the bike, folding down the handlepost and storing the bike vertically each meet different needs.

Designed for everyday use

High carrying capacity in a compact format

Tern longtails and midtails feature an extended rear rack and small wheels. This keeps passengers and cargo relatively low to the ground.

These bikes provide extra space for passengers or luggage while remaining more compact than a large cargo bike with a front box.

A bike to share

On many Tern models, the saddle height and handlebar position can be adjusted quickly. This allows several family members to use the same bike without complicated adjustments.

The adjustment range varies depending on the model and generation.

Easier to store in everyday life

Several Tern longtails and midtails can be stored vertically to save floor space. On some models, the handlepost can also be folded down. This reduces the bike’s height and makes it easier to fit into a van or the boot of a suitable vehicle.

Check beforehand that you have enough space to store the bike vertically and that you can handle its weight safely. Also take any fitted accessories into account.

Accessories designed as one system

Tern offers seats, wheel guards, footrests, handholds, panniers, front racks and protection from rain and sun for its longtails and midtails.

This allows the bike to evolve with your family and your transport needs. Not every accessory is compatible with every bike: compatibility depends on the model, the generation and the combination with other accessories.

Supercycles’ vision

Carrying capacity is not the only reason to choose a Tern. The frame, rear rack, handlepost, kickstand and accessories are designed to work together to make everyday use as practical as possible.

Above all, choose a model that suits your daily journeys. A compact midtail may be sufficient if you carry one child. A longtail offers more space for two passengers and their belongings, but weight, equipment and price vary depending on the version.

Vertical storage is useful when you have limited floor space, for example in a garage or shared bike storage area. Make sure there is enough height and room to manoeuvre, and that you can place the bike upright easily and safely with the fitted accessories.

For the hills around Beersel, Alsemberg and the south of Brussels, the motor and drivetrain need to be suited to the total weight you carry. The most powerful or most fully equipped version is therefore not automatically the best choice for every family.

Designed in Finland, developed in Taiwan

Tern was founded in 2011, building on years of experience with folding bikes. The brand works with an international team: the bikes are designed in Finland and technically developed in Taiwan. Tern’s headquarters and innovation lab are located in New Taipei City.

This experience is reflected in both the folding bikes and the longtails and midtails. For models designed to carry passengers and cargo, Tern tests the frames and forks in-house according to the specified load. They are then tested by independent laboratories in accordance with the standards applicable to the relevant model. Depending on the model, the electric systems and drivetrains come from specialist manufacturers such as Bosch and Shimano.

Tern also focuses on long-term use. For bikes covered by the 7-Year Support programme, essential replacement parts remain available for at least seven years after purchase. With suitable accessories, the bike can also adapt as your family’s transport needs change.

Which Tern should I choose?

The Tern range evolves regularly. Motors, drivetrains, batteries and equipment vary depending on the version and model year. When choosing between a midtail and a longtail, the main considerations are passenger and luggage space, comfort and overall bike dimensions.

Start by considering what you want to carry every day: one or two passengers, school bags, groceries or other gear. Also take your routes and available storage space into account. Then compare the versions and accessories that best suit your needs.

One or two passengers: the first choice

The Quick Haul and HSD can carry one passenger. With the appropriate accessories, the Quick Haul Long and GSD can carry two children or one adult passenger.

The right setup depends on the passengers and the bike you choose. Take into account:

  • the maximum total permissible weight, including the bicycle, driver, passengers, accessories and luggage;
  • the maximum load of the rear carrier;
  • the weight of each passenger;
  • the usage and weight limits of the child seats and accessories;
  • the compatibility of the accessories with each other and with the generation of the bike.

The age and size of the children also play a role. Two child seats, a child seat with a cushion or two seats for older children each require a different arrangement.

At Supercycles, we help you choose a setup that provides enough space and complies with Tern's regulations.

The Tern passenger transport system

Tern approaches passenger transport as a complete system. There are four essential components that, depending on the child seat, can be partially integrated:

  1. A suitable seat.
  2. An individual grab handle for a passenger to hold onto.
  3. Sturdy footrests on both sides of the bike.
  4. Wheel protection that prevents feet, legs, clothing or shoelaces from getting caught in the wheel.

For young children, use a suitable child seat with a safety harness, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

A compatible two-post stand provides extra stability when getting on and off, but does not replace the support provided by an adult. Always hold the bike while a child is on it.

At Supercycles, we check the complete combination of bike, seats and accessories, so that all the parts are properly matched.

FAQ?

What is the difference between the Tern Quick Haul and the HSD?

Both models are compact electric midsize sedans that, with the right equipment, can carry one passenger.

The Quick Haul is more simply equipped and feels familiar to those accustomed to a compact city bike. The HSD offers more loading capacity and equipment options for families who use their bike intensively on a daily basis.

The exact differences in engine, battery, transmission and comfort depend on the generation and the versions you are comparing.

What is the difference between the Quick Haul Long and the GSD?

Both electric longtails can carry up to two children or one adult passenger with the appropriate accessories and within the permitted load limits.

The Quick Haul Long offers a more practical, simpler equipment package. The GSD adds more loading capacity, comfort, and integrated features, depending on the generation and version.

This comes at a higher weight and a higher price. The choice depends mainly on how much you transport and which additional services you use daily.

Are all Tern bikes folding bikes?

No. Tern offers full-fledged folding bikes, with or without electric assistance. The longtails and midtails cannot be fully folded like a traditional folding bike.

On some models, the steering post can be folded down to reduce its height. Several long-tails and mid-tails can also be stored upright to save floor space. Depending on the model, they can also be moved into that position.

Can two children be transported on a Tern?
Can an adult be carried on the back?

Several longtails and midtails from Tern can carry an adult passenger with the right equipment.

For this, a suitable seat, handrails, footrests, and wheel protection are required. Respect the maximum load capacity of the rear carrier and the maximum total weight allowed for the bike. For the respective model and generation, also check the weight limits of the accessories used.

Can a Tern be used by more than one cyclist?

Yes. With many Tern models, the saddle height and handlebar position can be adjusted quickly, so multiple family members can use the same bike.

The adjustment range varies by model. A test ride is recommended, especially when the riders differ greatly in body height or preferred riding position.

Can all Tern bikes be parked upright?

Check that there is sufficient height and maneuverability, and that you can handle the weight of the bike properly. Have passengers get off first and remove loose luggage before you put the bike upright.

Can a child seat you already own be used?

Before use, check the attachment, the child's weight, the available space, and its compatibility with wheel guards and other accessories. Follow the recommendations for the specific model and generation of the bike, as well as the manufacturer's instructions for the child seat.

What warranty does Tern offer?

Tern offers a standard five-year warranty on the frame, stem and front fork. If you register your new bike with Tern Care free of charge within 30 days of purchase, this warranty can be extended to ten years under the manufacturer’s terms and conditions.

Other original parts from Tern and BioLogic generally have a one-year warranty, unless otherwise stated. The warranty terms of the respective brand apply to parts from other manufacturers.

Can I go for a test ride on a Tern at Supercycles?

Some versions of the Quick Haul, HSD, Quick Haul Long and GSD are available for a test drive. View our online inventory or contact us before your visit to find out which models you can test drive.

During the test ride, we will adjust the bike to your size and will guide you through the use of the standard and the first maneuvers. We will also help you experience the differences between the mid-tail for one passenger and the long-tail for two children.
